What Is a Draft Hydrant?
A draft hydrant—sometimes called a dry hydrant—is a permanently installed pipe connected to a static water source such as a pool, pond, lake, or river. Unlike a municipal hydrant that’s fed by pressurized water mains, a draft hydrant is designed so that a fire engine’s pump can draw water by suction (drafting), giving firefighters fast, reliable access even in rural or hillside locations.
